Newbie with an allotment

Hi

I only started growing last year and luckily it was a great success, so i went out and got an allottment, the one I was given was very overgrown but thank you to the commitee in charge....it's now 95% clear and looks great....and HUGE!
Now as i didnt know when it would be ready I couldnt start work on seeds at home.....but now the problem I have now is that I have a great space but am unsure what I can still plant and have grow in time.
I will go and speak to my garden centre tomorrow for advice but will take any advice from yourselves as i'm a complete novice.

I think you still have lots you can grow. If you want to start from seeds there is still time to germinate sweetcorn and squashes. Also the root veg - carrot, parsnip, radish. Salads - rocket, lettuce etc. And you can start the sowing for autumn / winter veg - winter brassicas etc.
If you go to the garden centre you can probably find some spuds to plant and some plug plants of anything you fancy really.
You will probably find fruit bushes and strawberry plants too.

Hello,you still have loads of time, I have very very little in as only got my plot a wee while ago as well.

Everything running late at the mo. I put some spuds in today and the carrots i set ages ago are dragging there heals.

Be careful of frost tender stuff it might say its ok in the packet but try and find out when your last frost is likey to be. I was warned today that i might loose my runner beans as alot were frosted off on 28th May last year.

Welcome to the vine WW . Lots of help and giggles here ........You can still be sowing beetroot , winter cabbage, Sprouting broccoli etc. It usually says on the packet and at the moment we seem to be about 2wks behind on the weather, so just go for anything and everything and see what happens.

Hi Warren and welcome to the Vine from me too. You've still got bags of time to get stuff going. There is a thread (its a bit of a monster) its called 'What I did Today', you can see what sorts of things us Grapes have been doing in the garden or on the veg plot 365 days of the year almost since the forum started.

Thank you for the replies, lol yes I'm in Windsor. The allotment shop is open tomorrow so I'll pay them a visit and see what they have.
I have a few things in the garden at home, peas, tomotoes, raspberries, blue berries (why u need rain water?), tons of strawberries, carrots, red onions, beetroot, few herbs mint etc.., runner beans still in kitchen, lettuce, spinich
think that's it.....oh and grapes but planted wrong ones as wanted eating ones and then planted wine grapes!
I'll see what I'm missing and grab it tomorrow, might quichly put some raised beds in so I don't have to bend so far over (fed up of falls on allottment)

Blueberries need rainwater because its more acidic than tap water, and as you know they need acidic conditions to thrive, Warren.

Re what to grow, as everyone else has said most of it, I'll just add: you can also start some runners and climbers still

Loads of places are selling off potatoes cheap now as it's coming towards the end of the season. Buy loads of them, plant them immediately. They do a good job of keeping weeds down while you tend to the rest of the plot. The process of harvesting will dig the soil up nicely!

I was going to buy the upright grow bags for them but ran out of space in garden.

Welcome! You could always try covering the ground with black plastic/thick paper, plant the potatoes through the plastic and keep covering them with grass cuttings as they grow through. I did this a couple of years ago and had a brilliant crop. There isnt much digging to get them up at the end either.

I grow my spuds the no dig way Warren and although you don't get the same massive amounts as from the traditional method there is very little digging to do. Plenty of advice of here and the internet on the no dig method. And it's true, it does keep the soil friable until you are ready to put something else in. The only problem really is that you never actually get all the spuds up,even using this method, so the following year you get some interlopers and have to get them out.
