  • Slug problem advise

My friend and I have been helping each other with our plots. My lotty buddy is moving and too busy to get to lotty 1 so I am now overseeing 2 sites temporaily. (My friend will give his up at the end of the season, bit sad!!)

We put more hardy veg on this plot as its too far away for me to get to regulary. This week everything had been attacked by slugs. Broadbeans, globe artichokes, jerusalems and potatoes. New beans I had planted for seed saving are now non existant!!

So my question is how do you manage slug invasions when you cant get there regulary? I would rather not use pellets but acknowledge that I may have to if I want a harvest! I have tried used coffee grounds in my garden and it seems to have no effect here?

    Any tips please
    Many thanks

    Hiya,
I only manage to see my plot once a week and have put Nemaslug down.
Works a treat albeit a bit expensive.

I do use slug pellets but dont like doing so, I do have a frog / toad on the bottom plot so only use as a last resort.

I grow the veg in modules, transplant and water in. The add a sprinkling of organic slug pellets. Then put a mulch of sawdust [if I have any]...and get very little slug damage.

It really is worth either the nemaslug [which apparently doesn't work in clay soils] or the organic slug pellets - I know all the other various methods are available but I just want the job doing!

Is it too late to start beans in modules now do you think, I have some root trainers? Can maybe get hold of some sawdust etc at the weekend. Itsa bugger not being able to get up there regulary! My globes are nearly gone too

Anyone head of the "SlugX Trap"?
I'm just reading through the Lakeland catalogue and spotted it. It's £4.99 and claims, "independent testers at The Daily Telegraph caught 147 slugs in one night!"

Apparently it runs on beer/beer fumes.

We shared the vote with you and we're not allowed to read the Lakeland catalogue? Where's equality when you need it?

I'm not a fan of organic-at-all costs and will use chemicals where I think they're more effective. However, Nemaslug nematodes are much more effective than slug pellets. They're expensive, but brilliant! If everyone used them then slugs would be on the protected species list!

It sounds like you have too many weeds for them to hide in. I had the same problem last year, u have just got to make more time. We have had a lot of dry weather, just think how bad your problem would have been if it was wetter.
