My new obsession in life is wiping out couch grass!!!

It can be done, with religious digging and smothering (with cardboard or whatever).
When it's gone, you'll find you then have bindweed to deal with

How do you tell couchgrass from any other grass?

I think the roots look like spaghetti in the soil when you dig it up (rather than having little 'feathery' roots near the surface like normal grass). Nothing more satisfying that pulling a great long root of the rotten stuff out (and nothing worse that hearing it snap and knowing it'll rehaunt you in a few months time)!
