  • Potato Quandry!

    Hi peeps
Am overseeing my allotment buds allotment at the moment.
Went up last night and 3 rows of potatos have no foliage at all!! nothing!
Gonna take fork up tonight and have a furtle about to see if there is anything left underneath?
They were gonna be maris piper! Other 3 rows are untouched so far.

Do you think there will be anything left?
We had no problems at all last year, do you think its slugs or pigeons or some other fiend!!

If the foliage has just been munched, then it will likely resprout - I've been trying to get rid of some volunteer spuds out of my onion bed by just pulling the tops off, but they're resprouting within days! But it seems unlikely for something to much all the tops off in one go Are you sure they haven't been pulled up by someone rather than something?

Oh I hope not! Will have a check tonight, a good old rummage below the surface to see whether any stem left? Good news they will resprout if there is anyhing left.
Cant imagine they have been pulled tho? Its the posh site and my friends plot is in the middle of it.

Plus we are definately not entered in the plot or veg competition! Lol! So we are no competition to anyone! Could it be slugs maybe, the other beds have been ravaged by them?

I guess it could be, some varieties of potatoes seem to be more attractive to them than others. Horrid slimeys! Have you got any defences against them? Might be worth investing in some of those organic slug pellets, otherwise any new shoots will get munched by them too

The foliage on my Anya & Osprey spuds is really poor: slow growing and has been nibbled by something (I would guess slugs).

Other plants have withered and collapsed: on inspection, the stems have been severed, probably by ants or cutworm.

All the bad plants are on the edges of my spud bed: the ones in the middle are growing really big & lush

That's no guarantee that people won't help themselves to stuff!

I would have thought slugs would have problems eating full grown potato foliage.

Hi didnt mean that the site was posher therefore no one would nick stuff! Meant that the security of the plot is much higher so harder to break into.

Two rows are resprouting already, but one has completely gone. Hadf a rummage underneath but nothing seems to be there either? Will check out those other pests you mentioned twosheds as not heard of them before. Thanks
