I get a couple of packets of dried peas ...They then rot away over winter

Personally I want something that will be green over the winter, to prevent soil erosion and nutrients from being washed away by the rains.
It's self-sown limnanthes for me, plus a bit of phacelia & alfalfa if I remember.
