growing in pots help please!

i'm new to this whole grow your own thing and have no expierience and no ground to plant into so everthing im growing is in pots

calabrese is in 5 gallon drums with the tops cut out and im feeding with fish blood and bone

what size of container would i need for the iceberg lettuce i have currently got in 13cm pots to start off

my cellerly is in a large pot about 35/40cm diameter but is very short maybe only 7" tall is there any thing i should feed this with preferably organic i did put cow dung in the pot but maybe not enough

next year if i wanted to make nettle feed would the smell be likely to annoy nieghbours if made around 10 metres away frow their house,caqn it be made in a lidded barrel and does it go on plants straight or do you mix with water

i told im new to this any help is greatly appreiated im 16 and tought id give this a shot

Hi, not quite an answer but if you're growing calabrese in pots you could try kabuki f1 as they are 'mini veg' and only grow about 18" tall. We grow them (in raised beds) and they are very tasty and have lots of side shoots too.

As for lettuce and leafy stuff we start ours off in 'seed tray modules' and then they can easily be grown in seed trays - say two-four lettuce to a half-size tray - they don't need deep containers.

i know leafy lettuce doesnt need deep pots but i was told iceberg grows alot like what cabbages do is that not correct

We grew our iceberg in raised beds but I imagine they might need a half-tray per head. We grow little gem and romaine and such like that are more suitable to sometimes pick individual leaves or small heads off, as there are only two of us and we don't want too large an amount at one pick - hence also as above the 'mini-veg' kabuki.

That must take a lot of compost, did it cost much? Great if you enjoy calabrese, but it might not be cost effective.

Celery? Doesn't need feed, just lots of water

There are 100s of old threads on nettle & comfrey tea, if you browse through.
I make mine in 5 litre water bottles, and add a splash at a time to a watering can

Whats the matter with THIS year? You could knock a batch up in a fortnight!

i suppose i could and it would be useful but would it smell bad in made in closed container or water bottle as two sheds suggested or would the smell only be strong once the lid was removed

smells once the lid is off. smells really bad when the lid is off. smells really really bad when the lid is off.

but then, doesnt smell so bad when its mixed with water and chucked on your crops

I grow my lettuce in those plastic window box trough thingies. you can pick them up fairly cheap and they hold a fair few lettuces.

thanks i know you can buy organic feeds but its around 4 pound a litre so not cost effective does the nettle feed go on straight or dilute
