i grew carrots in a waste paper bin thats was about 13-14" deep but i pulled a couple of carrots yesterday and they fanged or there not just one single tap root like a shop but carrots ive been told this was because the soil is too rich it was filled with hortans multipurpose compost which was the cheapest i could find at two 120 ltr bales for a tenner was the soil the problem or was there some other cause i didnt feed them and if i was watering i gave them a real drenching the pot was screwed to two batons to help with drainage

Well done for sticking with it Teengrower. It's great when you get it right but annoying when you don't eh? Keep plodding on and you'll gain more experience. No you should not be feeding your carrots. I would have thought that multipurpose was OK but then, they've forked which is a sign of either stones (not applicable!) or too rich. Next time try compost that has already been used (spent compost - do not add feed) or mix some sand with the good compost. Watering in pots can be a problem and you just have to do the best you can. Good luck with it all.

its not annoying as such not worried about it as its my first year but i think it would annoy me if it happened again next year also could anyone suggest a lettuce variety that has really big leaves seen people wrapping lettuce round burger meats but the lettuce im growing would be no where near big enough for thatLast edited by teengrower; 12-08-2010, 09:09 PM.
