The generally accepted way with broad beans is to cut the stems 2 or 3 inches above ground level and leave the roots in the ground so that the fixated nitrogen nodules can feed the follow on crop, usually brassicas.
I personally pull the whole plant up, roots an all, preferring to let the nitrogen work on the compost heap as an accelerator.
The green stems can then be composted. As the greenery wilts the blackfly will die!
