  • What else can I plant now

I have managed to clear a fair bit of the land I have acquired for a veg plot. I have planted some onions and garlic as I felt after all my hard work digging it would be nice to plant something. I have some peas which I will put in at then end of the month.

Am I too late to plant spuds. There is an area next to a fence, which is going to be replaced at some point, I thought if I plant spuds in there until they have replaced the panels I will at least be using it rather than keep digging and weeding it. I have not seen any seed spuds while I have been in the garden centres.

Too early for spuds, someone on our site down here in tropical Dorset had their xmas spuds frosted the other day burnt all the tops off, you may be able to find some spring cabbage plants to put in over winter or sow some broad beans

I have kale in and its nearly time for garlic you could get a quick turnip crop in. You can plant rhubarb sets, winter onions, spinach, cabbage such as January king. One of the best things you could do is have a look at your local garden centre to see what seeds they have for sale, it could give you a good idea what you could sow at this time of year.

          Hello Anne

Great that you have some land that you've cleared. Most winter crops are long set out by now...but good to have a few early onions and garlic on the go. I always like to feel I can steal a march on the next season.

However maybe you would be better to prepare for next year by really larding the land with muck (spent mushroom ?) and let the worms get to work over winter. If there are still a lot of perennial nasties in there...you can mulch with cardboard first....or invest in some mypex....when I clear land I move it about for a year or two and grow various crops through it.

They'll have all kinds of seeds, but it doesn't mean they are suitable for sowing now.
Instead, see what plants they have. Cabbages etc would (should?) have gone out in July/Aug.
