  • Council is trebling allotment rents!!

Barnet Council is proposing to triple the allotment rents for £6 per pole to £17.!!
This will mean that many people will no longer be able to keep their allotments and when they give up the council will sell the land for development.
There is a petition to try to prevent this - please can you support us - the link is Fight allotment rent increases in Barnet Petition.

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place, I'm just so upset (

Signed for you. Hope you get the result you are after. Have a look in the Allotment advice board as there is a thread there with a very similar story and a positive outcome.

Jogette, I have already signed that petition but the very best of wishes and support from me. You have done the right thing in bringing the Harwood v Reigate and Banstead Council case to the Attention of Barnet Council. Make sure your local Councillors and MP's are aware of it as also the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations 1999 which makes it automatically unfair for the landlord to impose an arbitrary increase in rent. Guidance by the OFT on unfair terms in tenancy agreements indicates that unless increases are linked to such external factors as the RPI or evaluated by an objective person independent of the landlord they may be deemed to be unfair

Although I dont have an allotment yet because of the waiting list length, I have been told by friends that our council is putting the allotment rent up from £35 pa to over £100 because of the spending cuts...sad times we're in!

I expect ours will go up next year too, as the council have encourage lots of it's staff to take early retirement or go part-time, as well as renting out several floors of office space to appropriate community services, which means the Director is now on the ground floor. Huge cuts happening, but at least they are reducing their own costs too.
