  • Potato racing!!

It`s official folks..its potato racing season, everybody (well nearly everybody) on our allotment site has planted their first early seed potatoes in the hope of producing the first crop, many have had their`s in for quite a few weeks now, they must have done it under the cover of darkness, so that nobody could see them beginning the race. I bet many of them get frosted on the first fence!!! It happens every year.
Does this sort of thing (potato racing) happen on your plot?

I must add that I`m in the race as well...and I`m in with a chance

Never heard of if, but what a brill idea!

Any methods fair game, presumably - fleece or cloche covers, in pots or ground?

I grow a few in the greenhouse in a tub - they went in last week, but even those planted at the plot in March got the tops frosted in May last year. It's always a risk. Worth it if it works but an expensive mistake if it doesn't.
Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I'd much rather the potatoes get frosted in May than what we saw at the same time, when we realised that we had Aminopyralid! I thought it was frost at first then googled and then cried.

I might [and I mean might] get Mr Z to pop some in under a cloche in the next few days...

I'm going to put a few in the polytunnel next weekend but won't be putting any outside for a fair while yet. Never heard of racing with them but we're not a competetive plot.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We put our first few in the potato planter on Saturday, they are in the polytunnel but we know we will need to keep them covered for a while. If we don't just plant them and get on with things we would never have any tatties before Christmas!
