Ideas what to plant around my allotment boundries?

At this stage I'm only looking for ideas about what to grow around my boundries.
It's a relatively new site and windy being sited on a hill!

There is already some wind break netting surrounding the plot though I would like to use some veg/fruit for defining the boundry and possibly giving some protection for veg in raised beds........We are not allowed sheds on our site so I would like to make a little private area also with the help of plants/fruit/veg
I don't want to cast any shade on neighbouring allotments and would be conscious of this also.

Well, I think fruit bushes are your answer, we have thornless blackberries on one side of our boundary and that works out well, some of the other lottie holders have their rasberry canes as a boundary.

Hadn't thought of blackberries......though I do love blackberry and apple jam!

Only issue with raspberries are the suckers that they'll throw up on the neighbouring plots. Some sites don't allow it.. Me? I'm happy as I've had a load of free rapsberry canes

My plan is to put fruit bushes one some of my boundary, so go along with that suggestion.

Our site is putting up an edible hedge - hawthorn/crab apple/ and some others to act as a wind break on part of site.

If you are allowed some structure, you could make some trellis around the area you want to make private (guessing it's a small area for seating) and grow sweet peas/climbing nasturtiums. Or if only want to grew veg, then a lot of the beans have pretty flowers and will seclude an area well during the summer months. You can grew these up canes too.

Sunflowers/ Jerusaleum artichokes/ cardoons can make quite good screens, but if windy they can get blown over.

How about a living willow screen or fedge....just in one area to make a private seating space. Then go with the edible hedge idea for around the rest.

I would completely not suggest fruit or willow, as these will throw out suckers that invade next door's plot every year = neighbourly strife.

We aren't allowed to plant fruit within 4 foot of the boundary for this reason.

I have planted my own boundaries up with comfrey (Bocking 14, natch) - then I have raspberries within that (so 4ft from the neighbour's path)

There is also the temperary yearly growth of nasturtiums. You could put up some form of netting for them to grow up and add their flowers to your salads.

How about a wire fence with some squash growing up it? My lottie neighbour grows some lovely Serpente di Sicilia up his chain link fence!

I've planted jerusalem Artichokes in 1 area as a "wind break", yet to see how that works.

I have JAs on My allotment & last year they went to 9' tall.

I have cordon apples and pears up one side (anngled on 8 foot canes but only giving a 5 foot vertical height) and blackcurrants,redcurants, raspberries (beside neighbours shed) gooseberries,whitecurrants and rhubarb down other side.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I have bought some globe artichokes and am pouring over some catalogues of fruit bushes.
Will probably go with some blackberries and am also considering a Japanese Wineberry

I had a blackthorn hedge 10ft when i got my plot. Took the best part of 2 years to burn and tame it. Now its bl£$dy windy.
My advice if your having a hedge mantain it and dont put your neigbours plot into shade.
we're also giving JA a go if i ever plant them.
