How to get a fine tilth on stoney,clay soil

    I also have heavy clay soil, sticky in the winter & rock solid as soon as it dries out (about now!). I use layers of cardboard, loads & loads of council compost (we can just go & get as much as we like for free) and also raised beds as the topsoil is only a spades depth. I also start things off in pots & plant out when bigger.

      Look at bike shops for cardboard or ask in your local GC. I was able to get some boxes from garden furniture (thanks, Fi ) Mine are covered with FYM and mushroom compost with topsoil on top.
