Thought I'd check on the progress of my maincrop potatoes which despite being planted about a month ago have not shown any growth. Investigated below soil level until I found a potato only to find it has turned to mush! No growth at all. Dug around several others and they were the same. I think out of about 20 potatoes I have one rather sickly Desiree. The earlies planted about 6 weeks ago are fine. Suggestions as to why? The only thing I can think of is that they might have got too hot in the shed before I planted them so although they looked ok I when I planted them they were already cooked!

Yeah, they might have already been dead when you planted them
Try some more? If you don't get blight you should still get a crop (and if blight is forecast, cut off all the foliage)All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

I found one of mine that had done the same thing, the other day. Very dry soil, and it had been a ware tattie - not a seed tattie, as I couldn't get of that type (children, beware the errors of my sad tale !) - which had scab. I just thought that it was probably because the scab flourishes in conditions of extreme dryness.
It had sprouted roots and stems, so it had not been dead when it went in. So far, none of the others seem to have been affected in the same way.
No doubt Tattieman is donning his "T" logo overalls even as we speak, and will appear to save the day...There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.
