I have recently been told to cut the flowers off too by an "old hand".

How many farmers do you see walking around their fields removing the flowers from spud plants?

Welcome to the forum, Tracebe - as above.. everyone does things differently. That said, I can't imagine as you say farmers going around removing flowers

Have you asked your fellow allotmenteers Tracebe if anyone has scissored your spuds? I'm really curious to know now!

Sure it's not slugs? Mine have been stripped!

You sure it's not and old hands?

Thanks for the welcome guys. I only got my lottie end of april and spuds are all I have put in as yet as the rest was smothered in weeds :0? I have got a couple of pumpkins to get in and some cabbages.
I checked spuds last night and nobody has loped any flowers off as yet .....
The "old hand" i mentioned said she goes to some potato show every year and the potato man told her she should cut them off.
I for one will not bother and yes I know everyone has their way, as someone once said - listen to the old hand advice and follow about a third of it :0)

Welcome to the vine Tracebe and good luck with the allotment.

I have a veg patch at the bottom of my garden, not an allotment and so haven't anything to add to what's already been said. Just wanted to say hi.

Totally. My mum once pinched out all the side shoots from my tomatoes without asking. I was quite irrationally annoyed.

That made me smile TG! I was imagining a fellow plot holder (or a mum for that matter) actually saying "Please can I cut off your potato flowers/tomato side shoots?"
