    Hi

Try and save an offcut which you can layover the bed and rest on the raised boards. That way you'll not compact the soil on the 5ft beds. Looks good though!

Right guys, I think I have made the final plan (again) as the boards are coming tomorrow. As they are 12'6" I have enough room to make a 25'x2' bed on the south fence. Last chance saloon for any flaws me thinks. Thanks again to everyone.

It's amazing the difference 6" makes..........yeh, I've heard it before.....By reducing the paths from 3' to 2'6" which is ample for me, I can fit in another bed as long as I am allowed to removed the west side fence, I'm sure HM can advise me on that one. I don't feel I am compromising on growing space anymore. Thanks for all your advice.

Wish I had read this before I made my beds (two years ago) as I made them 6' wide and I have difficulty planting and digging the 1' in the centre of the bed. My paths are 2'wide and I find that sufficient, though I do tend to leave the wheelbarrow on the side paths. I didn't put in a central path and am fairly well disciplined to walk around to get to other side of the bed.

Just thought I would put an update to maybe inspire newbies, if I can do this in 3 weeks with my dodgy back then anyone can. Still loads to do but it's a good time of year to be doing it. Taking time in planning the beds with the help of my grape mates was definitely beneficial, thanks again.

Cheers Dave, I'll bear that in mind. I'm double digging manure in at the moment so that is raising the level until it settles again but I will bear that in mind. HM - You may also be interested in the compost.

If you don't mind me asking, BM how much were the planks? I've got house joists that I'm planning on using (they were free) - but at 4" wide, they take up quite a bit of room.. contemplating trying to source some scaffolding planks.

Look good although longer than I'd envisaged Just be strict with yourself and go round the end rather than step on the beds

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hi Chris, I think the going rate is around £5 per board......no point in telling you how much I paid as they were mates rates......

It seems an eternity since I last visited the vine but 6 weeks later the planning paid off, 130 barrow loads of horse carp & I'm just about ready to rock n Roll.
