Just as a follow up, I heard a rumour that one of the allotmenteers on the site had been gathering seed from the forth plant last year. I collared him today and he says it is a black flowered (or as near as damm it!) hollyhock!!!!

A black hollyhock, lucky you! mine are all wishy washy pale ones! (so I should go and get some more seed, I know, I know....)
