In the Autumn I spread a good few inches on top, then just before I plant my seed potatoes I dig it in, always get a good crop of spuds, no seed weeds come up, saves weeding. Decide where you are sowing / planting root veg as you dont want to put it there.

I leave it on top and lets the worms do there thing, then come spring I'm going to dig it in ( or my tiller will) I've have cleaned the path now btw lol
