  • Sarpo mira, sarpo axona

I have just received my Sarpo Axono seed spuds and are happily chitting on the window sill.

This is the first time that I have grown these. Also Sarpo Mira are another spud which I might grow.

Has anyone grown these before. What was the outcome, taste, crop size, ease of growing etc.

I've grown them a few years. Really easy to grow, never had a sniff of blight. They get good, strong haulms, so suppress quite a lot of weeds, good yield generally. The most important thing to remember with them is to count the weeks from planting and cut the tops off at 22 weeks - they just seem to keep growing otherwise, and the biggest potatoes get hollow centres

They work best as roasties, but are okay for mash if you make sure you cook them in small, even-sized pieces

I grew them once but thought they were very floury and not to my taste.

Sarpo Mira is super spud. Truly blight resistant and it is a really late cropper. I have had them still growing strongly in December. I've never had the problems with hollow centres that Sarz mentions but that's maybe down to localised conditions - hers and mine and so I don't take the tops off till I start lifting the crop. Very heavy cropper some spuds getting to be a pound and a half in weight. My ground is quite bad for potato scab and this spud seems to be resistant to that problem as well. Maybe not the tasties spud but easy to cook. I love them as mash with cheddar cheese added.
