  • Green ash for supports

I don't know if anyone can help with this.

I have inherited a numbert of young vines with my allotment. The previous holder supported them with canes, but these now need to be replaced with something more substantial. If purchased new this could cost in the hundreds, which is money I could well spend elsewhere.

There are a number of ash trees about the site that need felling and which would make ideal supports. Only problem is that they would have to go in green and ash does not have a good reputation for durability when in contact with the earth.

Has anyone had any experience of using ash in this way, and if so, how did they treat the post, if at all?

    Thank you

if you are using it green at this time of year when its dormant you would need to strip the bark below ground level as it may root anyway
