    i know why crop rotation takes place, all i was trying to say to boosmummy is that roots go in one bed, brassicas go in another and so on, thats what ive read and been told over the years. ie four beds for four groups of veg, which allows the recommended 4 year crop rotation. anyway i think we cleared that up, fingers crossed hahaha

      I think the point is that it's the taxanomical family that matters, not the colloquial name. So for example a turnip is colloquially a "root veg" but it is taxanomically a member of the brassica family, so you put it with the brassicas. Your "root" bed should be thought of as a "carrot family bed" to avoid putting brassicas and others that happen to be colloquially called "root veg" in there.
