  • is this anything to worry about ??

    Hi ive had my allotment a year now last autumn i applied a lot of very old horse manure to my plot
    the past two times i have been to my allotment weeding i have noticed small white worm/maggots they are pure white dont have legs or black heads and are slim maybe an inch long could be a bit more i didnt notice them last year but have seen several this ear i wondered if they had something to do with the manure ?? i have included a picture and hoping someone will know what they are

    one more thing they are long and straight in the soil that one curled when i took it out

      Maggots (no legs) are fly larvae. It's in horse muck: which makes me think of dung flies but I can't find a picture of the larvae yet

        I was going to say that you can use maggots as pollinators (I.e. in enclosures to keep seed true) but TS already did

        I'd not worry about it, if they bother you, pick them and and throw them out if the way.

          thanks very much for your replies ,im very relieved!! are dung flies black?? as i kept some of the manure in bags and after reading the replies there are lots of flies with long black wings in them

            If you have a spare minute or two during the day, have a braddle about in the muck (wearing gloves I hasten to add, there can be some real nasties in muck) and pick out the larvae, put them on a little tray and leave then on the shed roof. The local bird population will love you for it.

                  yes i did thanks but they were yellow the ones i have seen in the bagged manure are black

                    black, OK. I'm getting a few black flies by the patio now, and as I remember they always come when the farmers are muck spreading
