  • Oh Deer, oh Deer, oh Deer

HELP, our allotment site has been targeted by deer, they think they have stumbled on a wildlife supermarket. We've been up and plugged obvious places of entry but we desperately need to make the site permanently secure. We have some money, not much to go towards some stock fencing (we've done two sides of the site already). Anyone got any bright ideas on what we can do in the meantime and also point us in the direction of possible grants etc.

    Thanks guys.............................we are desperate

I use electric tape for the yard and some fences here. The dogs, horses and the cows when we had them knew to stay away. I'd think that deer would too. Doesn't work on sheep or wombats tho. Deer seem fairly hefty so I'd think they could push a lot of fencing over, or just jump over. Ali

Not sure if anything like this would keep them away.

Is that true? I'm having a problem at the moment with deer - barb wire fencing all around to keep out the cows/horses but they just hop over! Trampled my lettuce tunnel to the ground a few night ago, I'm worried that it will walk into my greenhouse

Way too messy, air rifle or a decent catapult unless they are red deer then you need a proper rifle and a licence and a police check and.......
Free-range deer = free-range venison, it's all about food not just veg.

Unfortunately its illegal to kill anything with a bow and arrow in the UK.

Sorry - Me and the OH are both archers (long bow style). Mind you don't think my archery skills are up to killing anything that can move!

Editing this to add that so far my advice has been useless - apologies! I'm with the shoot and eat it club, tho!

I don't know what the rules are as I live somewhere were deer aren't wild, but doesn't someone own them? In which case, isn't it their responsibility to keep them off private property?

Its illegal to use a bow and a air rifle on any deer in the uk , Also you can only use a shotgun for muntjak which as a last resort and only for crop protection. All other deer in the uk must be shot with the correct rifle
