Make a hole the size and shape of a washing up bowl in the floor just inside the shed door. After leaving, fill the bowl with comfrey tea.
Whe he's there, he can put a piece of wood on top of it, or take the whole thing out since I assume he'll be going there in the day...

It's actually written into our lease agreement that we don't lock our sheds to try and deter thefts. The letting officer thinks that in the main it's other gardeners that are the culprits. Even tea and coffee goes missing!. We are encouraged to report any thefts to the police but if it's other plot holders I don't know how it's going to be stopped.

That's disgusting. Why would plotholders steal from one another?

Because having an allotment doesn't mean that they've grown a conscience?

Sometimes it's envy (especially when plants go walkies), but I suspect there's an element of 'everyone else does it so why shouldn't I'.

It's reprehensible though, without a doubt.

No, people were moving things from our shed to another unlocked shed and vice versa, it wasn't a plot holder and we have our suspicions who it was but can't prove it. It was annoying to try and work out who your extra stuff belonged to and work out where your missing stuff might have gone.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Well the latest incident at the allotments made the local news. Vandals have somehow jumped an 8 foot high spiked and double fence around the perimeter of the site and trashed the place. Greenhouse glass was smashed, polytunnel plastic slashed and plants uprooted. The sheer pointlessness of it could make me cry. I will never understand why people would destroy others hard work for no reason at all.
Between the vandals, slugs and rabbits I will be lucky to grow anything this year. Even if I do I guess I better be quick at harvesting it before another plot holder takes it!

we have a good relationship with the neighbourhood police and they now have a key to both the gates and the clubhouse - its amazing what can be achieved over the offer of making their own coffee whilst on rounds! they cycle round the site on their mountian bikes or on foot if they are the regular officers. We have had 2 incidents of valdalism and theft while I have been there. Both were loged with the police and an incident number provided - there was a rumour they even arrrested someone for the last break ins - think it had something to do with them being found walking the streets with a lawnmower at 2 in the morning! the council have since provided some cash to plant prickly bushes around the fence - the hidden noat filled with spikes wasn't approved.........

Was it half term in Darlington FF? Sounds horrendous that amount of damage. When we had a spate of burglaries in our area it was the PC on the mountain bike reported as looking suspicious by residents!

Yes it was Dominic. It's so frustrating. Especially for the longer term plot holders who had establised polytunnels and greenhouses which were wrecked. I haven't had my plot for long so there wasn't much to damage fortunately. It's a good job I love it or I may have just given up on the whole idea.

I have emailed my local pcso to see if they have the engraver tool they used to postcode bikes with. It might be possible to postcode mark tools to make them more trackdownable if stolen.
