  • An Experiment.......

Today I took the tops off some of my toms and have popped them into water just to see .....if they root I'll pot them up and see if I can get them to produce some ripe toms before the end of the season. I'm being optimistic here and hoping we get a late summer

I do like to have a plan - or is it an challenge? One thing is certain, I can't have later toms than this year - still waiting

I have some with fruit but most are just starting to show flowers.

I have only managed to harvest a single yellow cherry tomato this year, but even that is one better than last year (And there is another one nearly ready too)

I used to grow a variety called Typhoon which was great for growing in an unheated greenhouse. It went off the market . if I'd known, I would certainly have done exactly what you suggest and being a vegetative method of propagation would have ended up with exact clones of the original plants.

One other benefit is that using sideshoots, the first truss is much lower to the ground allowing an extra truss which in a low roofed greenhouse can be a useful attribute.

A few weeks ago I rooted an armpit off a Purple Cherokee, it's rooted and potted up ....and.......
at only 6 ins tall it has it's first flowers. Bless

If any of those set the fruit will be sitting on the compost surface LOL

Since I have fruiting armpits, I'll start some more cuttings and see how long I can keep those going........
