5 year wait for allotment plot ended today.

Hi everyone. well, the thread title says it all - (and also five year absence from posting on this site). It's only half a plot - but seems huge to me. Has a greenhouse that needs some repair and a hut. Somewhat overgrown so that's the first thing to do.

Then I hope to plant something, hopefully, to be available next spring.

Any hints, advice more than welcome. I know little but am willing to learn!

Take your time would be first bit of advice...
Then maybe consider clearing some ground for some garlic and onion planting..
That way as you continue working to clear ground, at least you know you already have some stuff growing!!

Take photos so you can see your progress and cheer yourself up if it gets you down.
And yes, take your time - I started from scratch making beds here and just did them as I needed them over an 18 month period.

Congrats! You have all winter to plan your new plot and get the ground work sorted before spring! there's a lot of info in similar threads, but think about what you like to eat, and what is expensive to buy.

Despite thinking theres not much you can plant in October you will be pleasantly surprised to find theres quite a lot you can try so its worth as has been said, planting up as you clear.

It's really useful on this site to use the "Search" facility coz the question you're asking has been discussed loads of times and a Search will lead you to some of them, e.g.:

Well folks I had no choice but to be patient. I did a Freedom of information request that showed there were a hundred people above me. Some allotmonts, provided by my local council, were by 'invitation only' and not available to everyone. I made more FOI requests and within a few months was offered a site. Propably a coincidence.

Incidently, I'm in Merseyside.

Hi DTC and welcome from me too
To put your location into your profile so that it appears where mine says - Here and there in Sunny South Wales -, go to Settings near the top of the page, then My Profile, scroll down and you'll find a box to enter your location. It does help us to know roughly where you live because of weather conditions etc.

Congratulations! I know how you feel, at first its all a bit daunting but take your time. First thing to do is to get yerself a small gas cooker, a kettle and somewhere to sit so that after digging/forking a couple of rows you can take a well earned break before doing another two. Works for me.

Talk to the other people near your new plot, try and find out what they have had sucess with and what does not do well. Sit down and mastermind a plan. Start small and work up, be ready to change things if they dont work as you planned.
