Shades of Blaster Bates removing stumps at Knicker Brook...
I second totally what AP says, I have done many....many....too many...stumps that way. Tool of choice is a grubbing mattock or failing that a pruning saw/axe, spade and a pick, particularly one with a long chisel to it. Leverage is everything in this game.
I just dig them out, but it is hard work
One of the techniques Conservation Volunteers use is to dig a hole under the stump, pass a strop under(preferably a wire one), and use a Tirfor handwinch to pull it out. (A pinchbar stuck into the ground at exactly 45 degrees will act as an anchor.) This is a lot quicker and easier, particularly if you dig a hole around the stump, or even just off to the side that is being pulled away from, to give the roots less grip.
The only thing I would disagree with AP on is, we usually dig a trench right around the stump as close to it as we can get, then saw or cut through the roots uncovered before digging under and using a mattock to pop it out.
Or failing that, we ever so casually saunter off and leave someone else less experienced to do it.There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.
