  • Best weatherproofer for wood used off of pallets

    Hi all....

just wondering. Im planning on creating some beds/edges to make things look a bit more set out. Ive got a load of pallets which I've stripped the wood off.

Question is, what do i put on it to protect it, leave it bare or coat it with some kind of preserver ? Dont want any nasties leaching into the soil and neither do i want the wood to rot away after 1 0r 2 seasons hmmmmm..... any ideas peeps ??

I line my wooden beds with old compost sacks: stapled or nailed on

My plot neighbour has stapled thick blue plastic around his boards and posts. I'm not sure about that - it looks strange (but when the beds are full it would be less noticable) and I would be worried about the plastic keeping water in and the wood sweating when it gets warm, thereby rotting faster than it it had been left alone.

Another neighbour has painted his scaffolding planks with a liquid preservative, the new creosote replacement that is more environmentally friendly than the original (which is banned, by the way). I think it was called Creocote.

I would use hempshield - it is an oil that is 100% hemp - no nasties in it. I should imagine if you googled it, you would find a supplier.

theres a few water based replacements, creotect, creostain, none are as good as creosote, you can still get creosote, but you need to know where to look.

Personally I'd use cuprinol shades, something like that, a bit less stinky, and more friendly.
