1st visit to our allotment

Hi folks, had our first proper to our plot this weekend. We don't have a shed so we had to dodge the showers. On Sat I tried to clear a couple of the ready made beds, so I was happy with that. Sunday turned out lovely after the deluge on Sat night which made clearing one of the beds hard work as it was just waterlogged. I don't know if I did right by digging it over but I guess I'm just gonna go with trial & error. The shed on the 1st pic belongs to my neighbour who takes the other half of the plot as it's split into two. The rope between the two poles is the council's handy work. Gonna raise a small fence there eventually. There are some ready made blackcurrant bushes to that just need a bit of love.

On Sunday we tried to chop down the hedges as they have not been touched in ages. I could hardly move this morning

All in all it was great after 5 years waiting to just get on there & do a bit. Little & often I think.

Looking good, quite clear really, too! Little and often is the best way, it's far too easy to go all out - you'll only realise then in the morning when you try to get out of bed

You've a good few months before things start to pick up really anyway!

A good time to be taking on a plot. No real hurry to get things done you time to get to know your plot. You're right little and often. So often new plot holders go mad for a couple of weekends and think it's all done, never to be seen again! Enjoy!

Wadsleyparkowl - you're so lucky with that plot. The raised beds are a real bonus! I've only had my plot a couple of weeks and am also using the 'trial and error' method. Lots of advice and friendly folk on here though if you get stuck.

oh don't ! They make very good wind protection, and shelter for wild birds.

(or did you mean you pruned them a bit?)
