  • Littering on Allotment. Grrrr!

I went to weed the plot today and discovered a load of litter on it. I have my suspects, there are a couple of "old boys" who are there all the time and are often seen with 4 packs of the same beer in hand....

Although my plot is right by a major road and bus stop (there's a litter bin at the stop), the rubbish looks to have originated from within the allotment site. It's too far from the fence and its all in the same general area and right by the plot access road.

Now to catch the litterbugs at it and have a word...

Disgusting. Last year a young last was stood right next to a bin by the shops near me, finished his can and just dropped it on the floor. Stupid of me, but I was fuming - I asked him what was wrong with the bin.

      "Nothing" he replied.

I stepped closer to him and said well pick up your rubbish then.. He starred at me for about a minute and then picked it up and put it in the bin. I was a bit shocked, as I already thought I had put my foot in my mouth and was either going to end up in a fight (at the back of my mind all I was thinking is this lad probably has a knife so if he comes at me I'm either going to have to run or well - ya know.).

Anyway, I thanked him and went in to the shop. Legs like jelly

Came out and a group of his mates were there. Great Thankfully nothing happened, but I did have to walk through them as they moved in my way.

      Cheeky kids! (well, teenagers).

I have this problem where I live, my front garden is permenantly covered in all sorts of litter.... and not just from young ones. We live only a few hundred yards from the local shops and there is everything from beer cans to half eaten chinese takeaway dumped in there.

My boys are 23 and 25 and till this day still shove everything in their pockets, even when there is a bin right next to them, drives the youngests GF nuts lol. Dare I blame it on the parents though?

          Frustrating. Annoying and downright rude.

Put a note up saying you found a fiver in it.

Littering: the middle aged and elderly are just as bad, if not worse, than youngsters, and I think men are worse than women. Certainly the people I've caught in the act of littering have been men, and over 30.

I pick up a carrier bag full of hooks, bags, bait boxes, line, beer cans etc every time the fishermen are down on "our" beach.

edit: the photo shows what I picked up 2nd Jan on a 100 yard stretch of beach.

I live near a pub, and along our borders (that's actually our land according to the deeds, but we have a wall set back probably about 3' or so from it that runs around the bottom of our garden, then around the side of the house, joining onto a fence that's directly onto the boundary, and then again off from our garage - so we've a few shrubs planted there - but people always chuck chippy boxes, beer cans, bottles etc - all over the place in this "border".

              Really does my nut in.

There is no excuse........I keep a black bag hung up in the shed at all times. It's not rocket science.

I don't want to make excuses for anyone, but are you sure it wasn't foxes? The foxes go through rubbish they find on our site. About a month ago I found a red stiletto in the middle of one of my plots. Apparently they go after things with a human scent. We found a couple of bin bags opened near my plot and someones plot further up. Made a similar pile of rubbish to pictured. And once or twice I've not tipped my bag of veg waste into the compost, and the foxes have made a right mess with tea bags and veg cuttings strewn all over the place.

We have a fly tipping problem on one of our plots, opposite mine. That end of the plot is not used and all sorts is dumped there - the police got involved one time when there was cannibas growing stuff found but otherwise the council just clear it every now and again but it's a bit much - have had beds, sofa, wardrobes, radiators etc left there as well as smaller stuff. The path up to the plot isn't very good and I never would drive along it so they're clearly quite determined.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Perhaps you should print out the photos you took and hang them on your boundary fence or shed door. Or pass them round when you see other allotmenteers and just ask them who would do such a thing? Try and shame them into not doing it again. That really is disrespectful

The plot next to mine is an abandoned one - a dumping ground! A few of us on the site have cleared it a bit, but it is still full of nettles, brambles and rubbish! People from the houses nearby make the EFFORT to bring all their rubbish to the plot and dump it there. Window frames, kitchen units, tons of glass. Take it to the Tip! If you are making the effort to dump it, dump it in the right damn place! Grrrrrr.

The trouble is I'm fairly sure I know who the culprits are. They're old timers on the site and are there literally every daylight hour. And I'm not.

I finally got round to making a pallet composter a few weeks ago. Some git keeps using it for a bin. Always the same fancy brand of takeaway coffee cup and sweet wrappers. I've got my eyes peeled!
