I got accosted this afternoon on my plot by a guy who apparently runs a local nursery wanting to know if I'd like to pay somebody to do the work for me - obviously I didn't and told him that wasn't really the point of lotties. He then asked how much I paid and was there a waiting list, was tempted to refuse to tell him but didn't think it would do any harm being honest. He then asked if that was per month, I told him no, it really was less than £30 per year. He looked unhappy, apparently he had been thinking of doing some private lotties and had thought that he could charge over £100 per month!!!!!!!! Think he may be having second thoughts.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My plot is with Sheffield City Council. It only includes water, no facilities at all. The water comes from a shared tap and 2 hose pipes are needed by most allotment holders to get water to their plot. Year 2013-4 rent is £160. Year 2012-3 was £100. 25% reduction for pensioners.
The Council have over 3000 allotments. On April 8th 2013, Coun Bryan Lodge, Sheffield Council cabinet member for finance, said: “Our allotment fees are still among the lowest in the region and there is huge demand from people for plots.”
The council says it subsidises its allotments heavily. Even after the rent increases, it says that income from rent will cover less than 60% of the £300k+/year that the council spends on its allotments. I am not sure how they manage to spend £100+/year per plot when on our site all they seem to do is manage the waiting lists and invoice for rent is beyond me, but perhaps they do a lot on other sites that I don’t see. Last year we didn't use any water at all, but we still payed our bills.
We are now invoiced on the 1st April for the year starting 1st April. Where in previous years we have been invoiced according to Section 10(2) of the 1950 Allotments Act which states ‘If the yearly rent exceeds £1:25, it is not permissible to provide for more than one quarter’s rent to be payable in advance. The reason the Council are doing this is because they believe the Act is long overdue and should be reviewed.
Moving from 'in arrears' to 'in advance' payments has mean't having to pay two years' rent in a couple of months this year.
Might have a grudge with the Council over their policies, but it hasn't dampened my love of being at the allotment. £3 a week is cheaper than going to the local gym.

Hi there,
I have two plots at a site in the London Borough of Bexley. One is a defined as a half plot (125m2) but is probably in reality about 190m2. It costs £35 a year. And I have a full plot which is £70 a year. It's half price for over 60s and I think for anyone unemployed or on low income.
Water troughs are on site every three plots. No toilets, no shared equipment, no shop. But we get free chipping and manure. We can have sheds and greenhouses of max size 6x8m. And we are allowed to keep chickens and bees, with council permission.
I actually don't live in the borough, although I'm on the boundary and the site is very nearby. But this borough centrally manage their allotment sites and finding a vacant plot was far easier than one in my own borough where each site has to manage itself. If you are living in the borough or nearby and are looking for a plot, it's well worth a visit to the council website to find info on enquiring about potential vacancies.

We pay ( Catcliffe, Rotherham) £40.00 per plot ( approx 26 feet x 86). I think it's reasonable - about 78p per week for a lot of ground. This is inherited from the Parish Council. We've recently become self- managed, pay all costs, plus £1.00 a year site rent to the Council and have kept the level of rent so that we can accumulate funds to improve the site - and there are needs. Our only cost at the moment is water - could be as much as £600.00 as there is a lot of livestock (too much but previously approved by the Parish Council ( who now seem to regret it!)

Hi. I have just dug out my bill from last year from my council. I like in Redditch and have what they call a small standard or half a plot. I pay £24 a year plus £9 for water for a small plot. So £33 a year in all but believe there are discounts for OAPs. My year runs from beginning of April till end of March.
Not to bad a price compared with some places.sigpic
