He must be on a concessionary rate for some reason. The base rate from LCC is £37 for a full plot this year with 50% subsidy for those eligible = £18.50 + whatever the self managed site has to add for water, insurance, equipment, maintenance, etc.

A full plot on our site with concession is £38.50 & you know what facilities we have just make sure youre comparing apples for apples & that site will be subject to the same outcome as every other site in Leeds which the council own...thats why we need to find an acceptable solution to the problem.

Think I may have met a numpty HM, he didn't know his site was LCC run & to cap it off he didn't even know the name of the site.....................what he did say which may tally with what you have said is that it used to be his mothers plot so you can bet your bottom dollar he's getting it on the cheap.....

Lest we forget. Most local authorities have millions of pounds in contingency funds as came to light when the Iclandic banking system failed.

I would love to be able to ask them exactly what the stashed money is for and when will it be used and what for.

Surely with central government cutting back subsidies now is the time to take some of the money out the bank and spend it and not just on allotments.

Anger over planned allotment rent increase (From Haringey Independent)

Allotment holders are angry at proposals in the council budget to double the rent of plots next year.

The proposals are part of Haringey Borough Council’s proposals which is due to be passed at the end of this month.

There are currently 27 allotment sites in the borough and it is estimated the increase in rents will raise £60,000 for the authority.

            Is anyone from there?

A spokesman for Haringey Council said: “The proposed increase in allotment fees is one of a number of budget proposals to be decided at the next full council meeting on Wednesday 27th February.

They could always increase the council tax on band "E" properties.

We are a self managed site , we pay a ground rent to the council per acre of land that we hold . The council do diddly squat as maintenance as we are responsible for everything on site from security fencing to paying our water bill. We set our own plot rents and manage to cover all costs. Could you not come to a similar arrangement with the council whereas you as a site just rent the land ? My plot is a full twenty rods, rent is £40 per year and that includes water, the public liability insurance, membership of NASLG and general running costs. Our kitchen and shop are self financing covering diesal for the gennie and gas for the cooker.
If you could absolve the council from the maintenance aspect of it all and just come to an agreement
on the rent of the site than it could bring down costs and you set your own rents .

If we're looking at solutions then they could cap council wages to a max of 50k a year.
And that in turn would reduce the future insanely high pension burden.
But no apparently we're to expect council managers to earn more than the prime minister.

As a recreational activity, I wonder if the Leisure Centres will have a hike in their prices in line with the proposed allotment rises.

Council cutbacks here too - Just been announced that the island where I volunteer (and scattered my husband's ashes) is to be sold by the Council as there's not enough money to run it in the kitty. Libraries and a swimming pool to be closed. Leisure/recreation/ call it what you will seems to be the first thing to be axed - but I digress (for a change!).
