What can I do in the rain?

Oh, I have so many jobs that need doing and today is my only chance until next weekend but cold rain is forecast pretty much all day.

I wanted to spread manure over a couple of beds.

Rake over the paths between the beds and put down weed matting.

Possibly plant some onion seeds that have been growing in modules outside over winter (forgot to put plant them out late autumn so they've been "overwintered" in their pots!).

I have other jobs to do in the greenhouse which I guess I can at least get on with, but can I do any of these other things in the rain or is it a waste of time or potentially damaging to do any of these things in the rain?

So frustrating. We're all in the same boat. Might need one if it carries on. As long as you don't mind getting wet I would have thought you could spread your manure, it will be very wet and heavy. Avoid treading on the soil as you will compact it. Have fun and then a nice long bath!

I'd say it depends on your soil, If it's very clay-y, don't plant onions or do anything that involves standing on it. So you'd be fine to do your paths, and spread the muck as long as it doesn't mean standing on the soil. If your soil is sandy and free draining, you should be fine to just crack on with it all

Brilliant, thank you. The forecast looks like a potential break in the rain this afternoon so I'll get my greenhouse jobs done this morning and pop down the plot this afternoon.

I have no idea about soil type but my mum and dad (who are far more experienced than me) said it is really good soil. They described it as "loamy" but I have no idea what that means. I think my mum said it is not as heavy as clay and not sandy, so I guess it's inbetween!

I've been singing and planning for what seems like months .... it's been far too cold, wet and gloomy out there to do anything useful on the veggie patch .... i've held out on the sowing .... until now .... i've just sown 7 trays of seeds in the hope that we get "sensible" weather this year ....
