  • Is it too cold to plant seeds etc?

I've had a bit of illness reently and some family problems that have prevented me going to the allotment. I've dug it over etc - is it to cold/late to plant out?

I really do lack a lot of knowledge about gardening.

I certainly hope not - I haven't got a thing in the ground yet myself either!

Got a few things just starting on the windowsill and also in the poly at the plot, but I was just planning my outdoor sowing for the rest of this week and the weekend.

And I have planty of spare seeds just in case the first batch don't germinate or they can be a succession sowing if they do.

At the end of the day, if they don't come up you have only lost a few seeds and a bit of time

I got Tatties, Butternut Squash and Peas in at the moment.

I bought some more seed potatoes that have large roots out the bag but as they cost me 50p a bag I don't mind

I have also bought 6 Runner bean plants as plug plants along with broad bean and cabbage seedlings they are in my small cold frame at the moment as I was looking to plant them out well at least the broad and runner beans this Wednesday. However I heard that after a short warm spell we are to get a possible frost in the North so as I'm in the North West not sure if to hold back till second week in May or will it be to late then to plant them out??????????????

Can't hurt to plant out tatties and keep them earthed up if needed???

I suppose it also depends on what your looking to plant out???

Don't worry, I'm down south and have only planted hardy stuff out in the last couple of weeks! Most of my crops are still seedlings in the greenhouse and won't even think about tender crops for another week or more dependant on the forecast.

What do you want to grow? If you tell us that, then we can tell you whether it's too cold. As for too late, we are all late this year.

What plants are you talking about? Give us a clue

You need to know 2 main things: hardy or tender (aka half-hardy)

            Hardy things like the cold.
Tender things like warmth, heat (above 10c, preferably more like 16c. Day AND night).

Your seed packets should guide you, or a quick g00gle

It will depend what you are planting and also if it is seeds or transplanting.

Below from front to back, seeds sown direct about a month ago.
Radish ping pong, radish french breakfast, carrots early nantes, lettuce all year round, lettuce little gem, and finally pea avola.

              Cheers Chris
