My husband has dug out channels/paths on our allotment, mainly to help with drainage since we are told that the plots flood in very wet weather. In addition I have ordered some plastic clip together tiles from Cooper's of Stow - cost I think was £13.98 for five tiles per pack but if you buy two packs you get one pack free. Not got them yet but they look good. There is a similar idea at out local cricket club to protect the grass during the winter - stronger but same idea.
