I have built various domes before..... Some spectacular failures too .... Been thinking about various design options for a while. This method seems very sturdy .... But I guess time will tell after I have the cover on on a windy day!

It's a great idea of how to link them together, wish I had of known that before I'd done some bracing previously where this would have worked better, faster and a lot cheaper than the options I used!

What diameter dome have you built here then?

Just a quick update.....I was waiting for the spring before I covered the dome to avoid the winter storms. I had an idea about how to make sure that the dome didn't become a kite....I planned to dig a trench all around the outer perimeter and then bury the excess plastic under the soil. I reckoned the weight of the soil would keep it all under control. You may notice that I am typing in past tense...

Alas....I thought that the bare uncovered frame would not be susceptible to the wind...I was wrong!! The gales (about 3 weeks ago) lifted the whole frame and dumped it in my neighbours plot! Thankfully didn't do any damage to his plot (and he was busy righting his overturned shed!). Only about 6 of the struts are broken though so it won't cost much to fix it up again!

Oh blimey! Glad there wasn't too much damage.

I'm glad you resurrected this thread, I've enjoyed reading it again, and I can't wait to see the finished item.

A structure to be proud of. My question is, what are the advantages of this over a normal poly tunnel?

                I think I know this!

                It's warmer:
                - minimum surface to volume ratio
                - always has panes perpendicular to the sun.

Ok but its a damn inconvienient shape, you would need curved beds and if space is limited on your plot it wastes a lot of ground compared to a straight poly tunnel. Also doesnt all that woodwork add up to guite an area to stop light entering compared to a few hoops?

Shut up Bill! With some of us it's all down to aesthetics.

Once more I find myself biting my lip, thats twice this week you have told me to shut up. perhaps you dont realise how sensitive and delicate I am. I thought my points were quite valid and I am open minded if some one can answer them.

No, but then it doesn't yet look like the hide of a Rhino...
