  • Stupid question- what is meant by 'rods' - sizing of allotments?

Hi what is meant by the term 'rods' when talking about allotment sizes? this is baffling me, is it a measurement term, and if so how is it calculated ie 10 metres by 10 metres = 1 rod etc.

    sorry to appear stupid.

    regards simon

the only stupid question is the one not asked. a rod is 5 1/2 yards or 16 1/2 feet

It is an imperial measurement and in metric 1 rod is about 25 square metres. My plot is 2.5 rods so I think of it as 60 square metres. A full plot is 10 rods, this being the amount considered that was needed to feed a family, so would be about 250 square metres. Hope that's of help.
