We got a good area of grass chopped down last night, going to tackle at the weekend, digging some roots out and covering. On the right of the picture is the walkway which merges into the bed! I want to get as much cleared as possible so I can plan the layout, pretty much have a blank canvas.

This is the area I want to clear, under the apple tree. There is an old compost heap which looks like mainly branches/brambles and ash from a bonfire. What is the best way to get rid of it? can ashes go in a compost heap?? Any thing I can do other than just take it to the dump?

Don't take anything to the dump that could (and should) be composted. Why do you want to get rid of the compost heap? (in the wrong spot?)

When I have branches to get rid of I pile them up in an inconspicuous area to slowly rot down. They provide great habitat for predatory beetles, spiders etc which will eat a lot of the pests, inc. slug eggs

Bonfire ash can be sprinkled on crops, it's high in potash K so good for fruiting plants (not leafy veg)

Yes just not where I want it! Now I know it's ok to compost the ash I will just transport it to the spot I want. I have just read that ash is also good to rake into fallow ground so will do that too as I have a large area to clear that is overgrown.
