  • what to do?

I am unable to use wjple plot this year and I have finished putting things in for now. I do however have a huge problem with rest of the plot and weeds. I have been told to put carpet down to kill weeds and dig it over. Is this correct? If so I have some chivken manure pellets do I spread those before covering? I dont have access to manure thats been left but I can get hold of freash stuff will this do?

Hi Weemer, I don't know what a wjple plot is nor can I guess. Cover you plot with cardboard not carpet. The carboard will stop light getting through thereby killing the weeds. You can plant through the cardboard or if it has rotted down, dig it in as suggested.

Why can't you use the whole plot?

You can't dig the rest if it's covered in carpet, can you?

Absolutely pointless adding any chicken manure pellets if you're not going to grow anything in that space.

and they'll only get worse if you do nothing. At the very least you should be deadheading them so they don't blow all over everyone's else's plots

Carpet is banned on a lot of sites now, because it is so problematic to remove esp if weeds have been allowed to grow on and through it. It needs moving once a month

Don't bother until you're ready to use it again. Keep it covered, with cardboard or green manures. Both will need watching though, you can't just abandon an allotment until the spring

Why, to feed the weeds? *puzzled*

i'm with the cardboard ,it's free, environmentally friendly, and can blanket cover the weeds, you could even lay fresh or rotted manure over the top which will rot down and be incorporated over the winter, you could even poke holes through and stick in some leeks, overwintering onions or winter cabbage plants

It doesn't pick up my dyslexic 'fro' because it is actually a proper word, BM.

As in 'to and fro' ?

Or as in what Michael Jackson's hairstyle when he were a lad?
