Potatoes in july

Hi everyone ive not long took over an allotment and ive been busy clearing weeds

but want to get planting a few late bits

whats the best type of potatoes to plant at this time of year ??

and if i cant get them local any online providers you recommend

Well in a couple of weeks you'll be looking to plant pots for Christmas. They take anything between 12 and 20 weeks to mature dependent on variety . So planting now you'd be looking to harvest sometime in November, however the weather may well be a lot cooler and you might not get anything much at all.

If you want potatoes I'd be looking to plant an early or second early variety in bags/buckets so that you can move them into the greenhouse when it starts to cool off.

The ground temp is 2 months behind air temp so with this lovely weather potatoes should be good for a while longer as there a root crop

maybe try one of the sarpo varieties such as sarpo mira to beat the blight

Spuds need *about* 3 months from seed to plate: that takes us into mid-Oct with ever-shortening days and cooler nights. I don't think it'll work, not outside anyway.


You'd be lucky to find seed potatoes, so you might as well just plant a supermarket one.
