I am new to veg growing and I was wondering about rotation because "Onions and Roots" always seem to be in the same rotation group but can you treat them as 2 separate types and plant roots in a bed one year and onions in that bed the following year?

I think most people develop their own rotation system after a while Horney.
I wouldn't put onions and roots together anyway, because root crops (parsnip and carrot in particular) don't like manure whereas onions do.
Welcome to the Vine by the way. Could you add your location (nearest town) to your profile please? Then it will show on your posts and will give us some idea of your growing conditions.

The way I plan my rotation is this. I have 4 beds, Bed 1 brassicas, Bed 2 peas and beans, Bed 3, Roots Onions and other odds and ends, Bed 4 Potatoes. Each year Bed 1 is changed for bed 4, and so on. If you only have three beds leave out the potatoes. That way the same thing is only grown on the same land once in four years and I don't get build up of pests and diseases.
