  • Chicken poop and newspaper

    Hi there,

my OH keeps 4 chickens and they do a neat arrangement of overnight poops on newspaper.
I'm considering making a trench and burying this every few days, about a foot deep. It might well improve the soil but will I need to add lime in the winter to counter the acidity of the poop?

Soil is clay, not acidic and currently rock hard!

    thanks

It's alkaline, rather than acidic - can you compost it anywhere? A trench is fine, but are you going to cover it each time?

I wrap mine in parcels of newspaper and put them in my daleks- then the eBay layer tends to be browns, it works quite well - the compost is great once it's all rotted down.

      Hi,
yep I was going to cover each as I went along. I'm currently using the dalek composter, kitchen peelings go in too. I'm adding a spadefull of lime every couple of weeks and a can of water each week.

Burying it is not the same as composting it, and you won't get as good results. Composting organisms tend to be above ground, not below the soil
