I've had black ones, didn't get on with them, but then i was using them as stya in one place bins, TS version of moveable ones, much better.
I've used pallet ones, very good, i got on ok with them.
Graduated to placing odd recptacles minus a bottom round the garden now, so they are still in containers, but where I want them composted. Also do as TS above, chop stuff down and leave it where it is [except for twiggy bits which go in a sack to dry and burn in the winter]

I'm re-doing my beds this year, in a different configuration for the anticipated arrival of a polytunnel in a year or two's time, so the compost this year will be buried in rows for the beans, and thrown on top of the soil. The beds are rock hard in some places, thanks to next doors buddeia, and need some worm action.

While I was tidying up my relocated blog this morning (thinly veiled plug), I came across some instructions I put together about 4 years ago for making a simple compost bin out of bits of wood. It's here: Compost Corner | In Spades

Since I moved here to Essex I've done another one exactly like it only a bit neater, using old decking planks that the previous occupant had kindly covered the garden with.
My gardening blog: In Spades, last update 30th April 2018.
