  • Manure and beans question

Got a big pile of well rotted cow poo delivered to the lotty last week. I wanted to dig the trenches for next years beans and fill with manure then cover back with soil.

So firstly, is it ok to do this at this time of year and secondly. how deep should the trenches be....they've been dug to 12" deep at present but can go deeper.

    many thanks

    All that digging.
Mr Charles Dowding says plant straight in the muck. (as long as it's reasonably rotted) - so just pile it up into beds.

You could always use bits of soil from the path to put on top. But again that's digging.

12" is plenty deep enough. Fill with your muck and leave to settle. Then rake your earth back on top.

put some shedded paper in the trench before the manure.

I've given up bothering with bean trenches. Too much work.

All manure goes in the compost heap, then the compost is added as a mulch, never "digged in"

(I've never used farmyard, but I compost guinea pig, parrot & dog* poo)

          * the dog poo doesn't go on veggies, only on the flower borders
