Who manages your waiting list?

On our site it's me as secretary who manages the list.
Keys are supposed to come back to me and at that point the plot is reallocated.

Other site secretaries have given me a few hints over the years and indeed helped out when we've run out of names.

One good tip is to always get people to come down to the site before you add them to the list. If they can't be bothered because it's 'too much effort' then it's unlikely they're going to make good plotholders and showing no interest is never a good sign.

We have put a notice up in the local supermarket in the past for new plotholders as well as raided other secretaries lists.

Its our town clerk, and while the committee don't like him, I think he's pretty fair.

Me on our site.....people tell us theyre giving up & we normally agree a date they'll be cleared out & let it to the next person on the WL......good idea AD to get them to come down before adding to WL & notices in supermarkets.....might pinch those. We share with other sites if we run out of names & I recently advertised on works (NHS) intranet which generated a fair amount of interest.

I'm surprised Hans Mum, I once advertised on the NHS intranet and didn't here a dickybird. I guess you have more spare time up in Leeds.

Our site is "owed run and maintained " by the council as far as I'm aware

Our Secretary does the list. I do like the idea of informally assessing people's commitment before adding to the waiting list. Will pass that on. Parish Council sends out the " non-cultivation" letters but only on our recommendation.

We don't have any form of committee and the clerk to the parish council does the waiting list thing.

Our secretary does ours. We do encourage people to show their face a few times but we have had some who have shown it every week , get a plot and then don't show it again , so it doesn't always work....

Plots are as rare as hens teeth in my area, the waiting list is beyond my life expectation. I therefore intend to make my back garden into an industial veg complex, poly tunnels, veg on the garage and kitchen roof etc, the complaints from neighbours will be so overwhelming that the council will offer me two plots just to get rid of the problem.

mine too except they only qualify for the owned,there are loads of emty and uncultivated plots and annual maintenance is non existant

Ours is council run, and we have an Association also, the council allotment 'man', also has a plot, where we are. Virtually no maintenance,still waiting for new lock on shed as an attempt was made to break in, which basically just broke the lock, we secured it with a padlock, new lock never fitted. But then I haven't followed it up either.

Our Association has managed the site since April - the Council, our Landlord, doesn't want the bother. We don't have a Committee as such - everything has to agreed by a General Meeting - so we three appointed officials (Chairman, Secretary, Treasure) have had day-to- day responsibility for site management imposed upon us. We try to work as a team though we're still learning. Have recently had someone leave and hand over their plots to other plotholders without informing us even though they knew the correct procedure. This a 'hangover' from the Council's lax management. Luckily, we don't have a waiting list so it hasn't caused a problem yet, but it could. We don't want to be officious, so have drawn up a simple code of conduct (now agreed by all members) - based upon the Tenant's Lease - so that everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities. Things are coming together quite nicely now, so the hard work is going to be worth it.

As Association Secretary I manage the waiting list. There used to be a tendency within the Committee to go through the waiting list and pick out friends,family members etc. I've stopped all that by posting the waiting list on the notice board with dates when each person applied.
I also send a copy to each new applicant so they know where they are on the list.
