  • So what benefits will I get from my allotment flooding?

Went to the allotment this morning to pick a few leeks and I could get no where near it.

All 20 odd plots are under water, in some places as deep as 8/9 inches, from a nearby overflowing stream.

So I was wondering, will I be getting any benefits from this or are all the nutrients gonna wash away?

Well thats an interesting question, The farmers in Eygpt benefit from the silt when the Nile floods down onto their farms. The water presumably poured in quickly so would be full of silt, but it will drain away slowly so drop most of that silt on your patch. If your house gets flooded everything is covered in that brown silt. I like your positive attitude to what most people would call a disaster.

Not an expert but...firstly commiserations on the flooding, secondly my plot was totally submerged just over 10 years ago to a depth of several feet and it doesnt seem to have done it any permanent damage. We actually werent here at the time because it was still a holiday house but I was told that it was a slow flood (they opened the barrage a long way upstream) and it went down slowly too. I think you lose soil and stuff when it comes and goes quickly. Our flood was from the river so any sewage etc was well diluted. We found loads of corn cobs. Best of luck with any clearing up.
