Filling new raised beds, best/most economical mix

If you go the buried relative route you may get extra eyes on your potatoes, In Redditch Worcestershire (where i used to live) they heat the local swimming pool from the next door crematorium (This is absolutely true) They could have a sign in the pool saying "Your heat today is provided by Alice whatshername aged 92"

The swimming pool at Lower Wick (Worcester) was heated by energy from the sewage works.
Used to love going swimming there cos it was so warm.

A sign wouldn't have the same effect there. :-)

I now tend to mulch heavily with straw up to 9 ins deep after my taller stuff is planted out especially spuds,tomatoes,beans ,peas ,courgettes and squashes.The mulch keeps the weeds down apart from the ever present horsetail and conserves moisture and is rotted enough to fork in with my compost/manure at the end of the year adding sufficient bulk to top the beds up.Plus straw is cheap £1.50 to £3 a bale depending on type and availability.one bale covers 2-3 8ft x 4ft beds.
