We built raised beds in the polytunnel bottom layer manure not that well rotted :/ then some free topsoil which I picked the bricks stones and other debris out of then mcp l I take off the top layer once used and redo ready for the next planting had some pretty decent crops the last 2 years

              Dotty,

If you read 'woodchip as a mulch' on the Internet the increased yield benefits seem to be considerable

                Dotty,

Not that VC would bother but you are supposed to keep a bucket in the shed and water it down before use

I know, but I'm just so 'prim n proper' just couldn't, and the other problem is, our sheds are tiny, no room to swing a cat, or anything else.

Our sheds are council concrete ones, all joined together and the door is just big enough for wheelbarrow to get through, they must be about 1+2 mtrs!

Just another thought would it be advisable if I was to use just compost to mix some sand in to help with drainage ?? And if so is there a particular type of sand that is recommended ?

I wud think, that a reasonable idea, I added some to my 'carrot' bed last year, not too much tho, think it was just 'sharp sand'. Carrots were good.

But see what others say, cos as you can see from previous posts, I do things then ask advice afterwards, not always the best plan.

                        No.

multi-purpose compost is too light & fluffy for raised beds. It dries out too fast in hot weather and doesn't have enough body, esp. for brassicas.

You don't need to buy topsoil, you can do what I did at school and make lasagne beds.

It does require some elbow grease and legwork though, but you don't get nuffin for nuffin.

When i made mine i filled with mushroom compost. it was cheap to buy by the ton and is basically well rotted manure that at some point had mushrooms growing in it. Has completely changed my soil structure from sand to loam. Higly recommended
