  • Another new allotment...

We got our allotment in late July last year and got it from this:

To this (along with the slave workforce)

After a nightmare few months we managed to get back this weekend and clear the majority of the rest, pull out the larger weeds and start thinking about what we'll grow.

I think we'll set up some raised beds at the back of the plot (we have a couple of Link-A-Board beds in the garden which we'll take down, and the kids old turtle sandpit which I'm going to cut the bottom out of for them to grow what they want), along with a storage chest (not allowed a shed as it's a 1/2 plot and the other 1/2 already has one) and old black plastic composter. The rest we'll probably just plant in rows (using Fothergills online planner at the moment to map it out).

There's not a lot in terms of established plants apart from the rhubarb, 3 strawberry plants and a few raspberry canes (not sure whether to keep the strawbs/rasps as they're not really where I want them). Going to keep the rhubarb as is, raspberrys I may keep and move while dormant later in the year.

Read through 'The Essential Allotment Guide' on the train this week, so raring to go again...

The bit I cleared last year has a thin covering of a vine like weed with little, pretty blue flowers on it, not sure whether I'll need to dig out or just hoe, or go chemical...

Reminds me of mine when I took it on, good work

If you have any ground you don't reckon you will have ready this year then just cut it back and stick in some cheap potatoes, least that way it will break up the soil a bit and you get an extra crop with very little work.

Before resorting to chemicals, post a picture of the weed on here bud,I'm sure there will be peeps that will reconise it & advise on the best way to eradicate it

Thanks all, I'll get a pic of the weed tonight if i get the chance.

The 'slave' was just posing in that picture, most of time she's sat on a chair reading her book. The other half hasn't been down since we looked at the plot prior to getting the key, she'll start helping when it's ready for planting apparently...

                  Quick question...

What can I stick in the ground from seed now?

Had a nightmare with a couple of snails getting into my Calabrese/Cauli's/Cabbage/Sprout seedlings, and what I was getting ready to plant out are gone (they were under a raised bed plastic cloche that I've now noticed has a split in it, asssuming that's where they got in). They've had a go at the cucumber seedings as well, but I've moved them elsewhere and think they should be ok.

The bed they were going into is all dug and ready so tempted just to sow straight into that, just need some advice on what's suitable to go into the ground from seed at this time of year.

I was in the same position as you last year, so I created my own sowing and planting calendar

Hi, I can't remember the name of that weed, but I have it on my plot too. It's not worth getting worried about; it's pretty delicate as weeds go, and should just pull up easily.

                      Good luck with the plot!

Speedwell. It survives better than it ought to because it's such a pretty blue we hesitate to pull it up quickly enough to stop it seeding!

Had done a bit of hunting around and realised it was speedwell.

I've put some seeds in so hopefully I'll catch up, and I've got plans tomorrow to get down there again for some more planting.

Managed to grab a couple of pallets from freecycle and am aiming to build a more secure cold frame solution for the future. Also noticed some old fence panels had been dumped on my way to work, went and took a quick look and discovered a load of old timber decking underneath (some was beyond saving but most is ok), just got to decide if I use it for raised beds or walkways around the plot (the youngest needs something to show her where she can/can't walk).
