  • Woohoo got an allotment :)

Sister in law has been told she has a plot and we are going to share it 😃 we have however been told that it is such a mess and been used as a dumping ground for so long we have been advised by another plot holder not to take it. We are yet to see it but do know it's the only spare plot. We are both excited and not afraid of a challenge and working under the theory that the worse state it's in now the more satisfying that first harvest will be. What state were other peoples plots in when they got them?

Hopefully getting keys in next few days so will get some pics up

When we took our plot on last year it was in a bit of a state but a couple of weekends of hard graft and we had something that resembled a plot.

Our plots were new, 3 years ago, I choose the one, where the 'builders' had buried all their surplus rubbish! I 'very dug up so much stuff, bricks, lumps of concrete, barbed wire, wire, car battery even, and also lots of tree roots, not to mention all the brambles, etc, but you get there eventually, even now still finding lumps of brick sect.

You can do it, and then feel very satisfied.

Have you considered asking for one - or two- years rent free for shifting all the rubbish?
You may end up taking many trips to the tip disposing of it, and using up a fair bit of petrol !( probably the very reason peeps dumped stuff there in the first place??)

Bit of advice...take a close look for broken glass it can take for ever to pick it all , and the potential of regularly cutting yourself in the future.

My plot had been used as a bit of a dumping ground at some point and I am still finding assorted rubbish 4years after starting. It has been very enjoyable getting it the way I want, probably more satifying then if it was all neat and tidy when I took it over.

The problem is what is buried, I have removed 3-4 rubbish bins of broken glass when I first started fortunately this was pretty much in one area and a foot or so down. So with the addition a raised beds means anything I have missed is hopefully out of harms way.

Well when I got my plot I got told by everyone on our allotments there had been no one on that plot for years and the people who had been on the plot gave it up because they could never keep it under control as it was really hard too. I took it on at the age of 13 and 9 years later I'm still on the same plot and its now under control and its really rewarding to see whats happened over the 9 years

Hmm still waiting for her to go get the keys, she is clearly not half as excited as me!

What site are you on? I heard there's some coming up on National Avenue.

She is now not getting the keys back to being 26 on the waiting list. I'm waiting for Noddle Hill. National Ave is too far away as I don't drive

Oh that sucks. I'm hoping to get one at National Avenue in next couple of weeks. I am top of the list. I've had one there before, years ago.

The rent has gone up quite a lot!

                            I know rents almost tripled!

She decided she didn't want it and couldn't transfer to my name as shed already told council she wouldn't be picking up the keys
